Because of the high numbers of COVID-19 in Kitimat and surrounding areas, our front line workers are at great risk of contracting the virus. Our staff are not considered essential workers in the eyes of the provincial health advisors and thus are not invited to early vaccinate. As our workers are in their 20’s and 30’s they are only eligible in a few months time. In the meanwhile COVID-19 has escalated in Kitimat and throughout the entire province (young adults and seniors) and is now at the highest rate of transmission since the onset of the pandemic.

The decision has been made to close the Library effective Monday, March 29th in order to protect our workers as well as our patrons. That said, we plan to offer essential services via contactless front door pick up, as we had throughout the spring and early summer months. Books, movies, games, craft activity kits, photocopy and interlibrary loans services are all available. Our phones will be answered, emails responded to and reference services will remain intact.

This was a difficult decision to make. It may be worth noting that both the Smithers Public Library and Prince Rupert Public Library closed their doors a few months ago for the same reason.

Please contact us to book your appointment to pick up Library material. To return your items, kindly use the book-drop except for fragile items which can be placed on a trolley in the entrance way.

We will reassess the situation in three weeks’ time.  We thank you for your patience.
